Here are some other tips for increasing the legibility of our site, regardless of which browser you use. All of our pages have been designed in two versions: one with graphics and one with text only. While all the graphics have "alt tags" or captions, we recommend the text only version for those using screen readers and those who wish to change their browser settings. The text only alternative also loads quicker, making it faster to move around the site.
Most browsers will allow users to change the background and text colors (as well as the color of hyperlinks or highlighted words that lead to other pages with additional information) and to change font size. When changing your browser settings, remember the following:
-
Bigger text means less information on the screen at one time and will require more scrolling to view all of the information available on a "page."
-
Often, web designers use default font colors and sizes that may prevent efforts to change font color and size. For example, our text only pages were designed without defaults. But, if you select white text on a black background on our graphics pages, it will render them virtually invisible.
-
Occasionally, you will need to click on the "Refresh" or "Reload" button (under VIEW in most browser's menu bars) for changes to take effect.
-
When changing font and color settings, experimentation is key.
Play around with the various options until you find a color combination
that works for you and a font size large enough to read easily without
straining.
In all cases, the first step is to select the text only version of our website. Then, follow the directions of your browser for customizing your viewing preferences. Below you'll find directions outlined for several of the most common browsers.
If your browser is not listed below it's likely the instructions for
changing color contrast and font settings are the same as for one of the
