  Vision Loss Support Groups

Research shows that peer support groups can be valuable in helping people deal with significant changes in their lives. By meeting with those who are addressing similar problems such as vision loss, members can provide emotional support to one another, as well as share information and solve problems together. By sharing thoughts and feelings in a safe, comfortable environment, people facing major life changes can learn that they are not alone, and the idea exchange and problem solving can provide new direction and hope.

There are many vision-related peer support groups operating throughout the Puget Sound region. Many of them operate in conjunction with a local senior center or retirement facility. Some are independent and operate out of a local library or home. Some meet with the assistance of a professional leader while group members facilitate others.

CSBPS makes an effort to keep up with local vision-related support groups in King, Snohomish, and Skagit counties as well as other nearby cities. We also often have information about groups or contacts in other parts of Washington State. Please call us to find out if there is a group in your area or if we have another contact for you. Beyond Washington State, we recommend contacting your local vision rehabilitation agency, local senior center, local ophthalmologist or optometrist, or call Lighthouse International at (800) 829-0500 to inquire about vision-related support groups in your area.

In the King, Snohomish and Skagit counties, CSBPS offers a low vision class series through many of the groups. Call us to see if the series is coming to a location near you or to schedule the series if you are already participating in a group.

Keep in mind that while it is a good resource for support and basic information, a support group is only part of a more complete approach to maintaining independence and well-being despite vision loss. To learn about professional vision rehabilitation services and other community resources in your area, be sure to also contact your local vision rehabilitation agency.
